Emergency vs. Regular Eye Exam

How to tell whether your eyes need attention today, or whether a scheduled visit will do.

In Short

Most eye concerns can wait for a scheduled appointment, but a short list of symptoms, sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain across your vision, or eye pain after an injury, need to be seen the same day. If you're not sure which one you're dealing with, call first, a quick conversation usually makes it clear.

The Real Difference

It's not the eye. It's the clock.

A regular eye exam and an emergency eye exam aren't different levels of the same visit, they're answering different questions. A regular exam checks how your eyes are doing over time: is your prescription still accurate, are your eye pressures normal, is there any early sign of a condition like glaucoma or macular degeneration developing quietly in the background.

An emergency exam exists because something has changed suddenly. A change that's been building for weeks or months belongs in a regular appointment. A change that happened in minutes or hours belongs in an emergency visit, because some of the conditions behind sudden vision changes are only treatable within a narrow window.

Signs that can wait

  • It's been a year or more since your last exam
  • Vision that's gradually blurred at distance or up close
  • Headaches or eye strain after reading or screens
  • Long-standing floaters with no sudden change
  • Needing an updated glasses or contact prescription
  • Family history of eye disease you'd like monitored
  • A yearly check-up for your child or a parent
Why Timing Matters

Some eye emergencies only have a short window.

Conditions like a retinal detachment, a sudden blocked blood vessel in the eye, or a chemical burn can cause permanent vision loss within hours if left untreated. Our clinic holds same-day emergency appointments for exactly this reason, and direct billing is available for insured patients so cost isn't a reason to wait.

What We Can Do

Either way, you'll see someone who knows what they're looking for.

If it's an emergency, we'll get you in the same day and assess what's happening using the same imaging we use for routine exams, OCT scans, fundus photography, and pressure testing, then tell you plainly whether it's something we can treat here, something to monitor, or something that needs an urgent referral. If it turns out to be routine, we'll simply treat it as a regular visit from there. Either way, the first step is the same: call and describe what's happening.

FAQ

Emergency vs. regular eye exams, answered.

How do I know if my eye issue is an emergency?
Sudden vision loss or blurring, flashes of light, a shadow or curtain across your vision, sudden eye pain, or any injury to the eye are reasons to call immediately rather than wait for a scheduled appointment.
Can I just walk in for an emergency eye exam?
Call ahead if you can, it helps us prepare and often gets you seen faster, but if that's not possible, come in and our team will work you into the schedule the same day.
What happens during an emergency eye exam?
We'll ask about your symptoms and when they started, then use imaging like OCT scans and fundus photography alongside a standard exam to figure out what's going on and whether it needs treatment here, monitoring, or an urgent referral.
Is a regular eye exam different from an emergency visit?
A regular exam is broader, checking your prescription, eye pressure, and overall eye health, while an emergency visit focuses specifically on the sudden symptom you came in with, though we may still recommend a full exam afterward.
